SSE HOSTS A WEBINAR ON LOCAL CURRENCIES FOR STONECREST

Stonecrest, Georgia – An educational workshop on the economic development opportunities of a local currency launch for Stonecrest will be held 11:00am Tuesday January 25, 2022 via Zoom video conference. This initiative is being spearheaded by Stonecrest Sustainable Enterprises (SSE) in collaboration with subject matter experts the Schumacher Center for a New Economics.

The term “local currencies” refers to place-based monetary tools for building sustainable local economies. Other terms for this concept include “complementary currencies,” “community currencies,” and sometimes “alternative currencies.” Today multiple communities around the world have issued their own currencies in cooperation with local banks and other institutions. These currencies circulate parallel to, rather than as a replacement for, the national currency.
The currencies are typically easily recognizable colorful notes that exchange at a fixed rate to the national currency.

“Our goal with this educational series is to explore with the businesses, citizens, elected officials, and other stakeholders what it might look like for Stonecrest to exercise a measure of local fiscal policy through the tool of a local currency”, states SSE Founder Kwabena “Cubby” Nkromo. “With Stonecrest Sustainable Enterprises, we want to introduce innovative concepts and outside the box ideas into the mix when thinking about the future of our city”. The webinar organizational partner adds, “The goal of the Schumacher Center for a New Economics’ local currency program is to demonstrate how regional communities can issue their own money to finance local production and build sustainable local economies”.

The initial virtual workshop will be followed by additional events in an ongoing series. Registration for the Zoom event can be done via email at info@Cubby4Stonecrest.org or call/text at 404.721.3992 for additional details.
